Alan Mirabelli’s fascination with Photography began at age four while watching a photographer make a family portrait. There was magic in the  technical process and the sitting seemed to be an important ritual for those sitting before the lens.

He undertook photography seriously in the early 60’s , learning the craft, and exploring its many applications. During University studies in Communication, he freelanced as a general photographer focusing on the needs of  community newspapers, corporate events, Weddings and Portrait work.

More recently he has specialized in Landscape photography- his  work is an exploration of stillness, rhythm, texture,  colour, shadow and metaphor inspired by the richness of the Canadian Landscape.

He has felt called to learn from “spirited “ children and has resumed portrait work in Black and White. Photographing the young people for Project Hope was inspired by this calling. Craft and technique was at the service of learning – learning about courage, that of the young person and their family members. Each exemplified an acceptance of the reality of cancer and the joy of living in the moment.  Their candour  and forthrightness was a gift. Interpreting each child’s uniqueness was a challenge - for how can a small piece of film contain the energy and life affirming spirit that each has brought to the process of healing.

Photography is pursued as a means of spirited expression, a form of renewal. He is recently retired as Executive Director of The Vanier Institute of the Family in Ottawa.
